Racing motocross is hard and sometimes you need a bit of luck on your side to get the results you want and need, but last Sunday at round five of the Maxxis British Motocross Championship luck deserted Kristian Whatley and the MBO Sport ASA Scaffolding Yamaha race team as two unrelated technical problems caused the team to DNF races one and three and robbed them of very valuable championship points.
Heavy rain overnight that returned in the morning while the MX2 riders where qualifying turned the hillside track at Whitby in North Yorkshire tricky slippery mess, but once qualifying was over and the races were about to start the track was in prime condition and the scene was set for some good racing. Kristian set forth fastest time in qualifying and backed that up with a second in superpole just over a second behind GP runner and championship leader Shaun Simpson.
As the gate fell on the first MX1 race Kristian gated third, but was passed on the opening lap by Tommy Searle, but gained the place back when Jake Nicholls crashed out of second place. Kristian was showing good pace and was in a comfortable third place with three laps to go, when a fuel line on his Yamaha got split emptying all the fuel out of the tank stopping the bike and losing the team a possible twenty championship points. With the race bike fixed Kristian was fifth going into turn one behind three GP regulars and Graeme Irwin who he seemed to spend the rest of the race with as the pair went at it lap after lap till Kristian got the upper hand and crossed the finish line in forth place.
At the start of the third and final race of the day Kristian didn’t get the start he wanted and was seventh in to turn one, but as the race went on it wasn’t important as a electrical fault stopped the bike after only three laps for yet another very unusual DNF.
After racing was over for the day Kristian said, “I had a good qualifying and superpole but in race one, while running a strong third we had a bike problem witch gave us a DNF. In race two after sorting the bike I got good start I was going well and finished fourth behind three GP runners. In the last race when we thought the bike was sorted I started losing power for a couple of laps till it finally stopped over the back and as far from the paddock as it could get, for another DNF”
The team where very disappointed with the days work, but will be back stronger and better for round six at FatCat on July 20th.
